De Dr.I werd veelvuldig ingezet in het voorjaar van 1918 en is beroemd geworden als het vliegtuig waarin Manfred von Richthofen zijn laatste 19 overwinningen behaalde, en waarin hij op 21 april 1918 om het leven kwam.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn februari 1917 begon de Sopwith Triplane op het westfront op te duiken. Ondanks zijn enkele Vickers machinegeweer bleek de Sopwith superieur te zijn aan de zwaarbewapende Albatros-vliegtuigen, die door de Luftstreitkräfte werden gebruikt. In april 1917 inspecteerde Anthony Fokker een gevangen Sopwith Triplane tijdens een bezoek aan Jasta 11. Bij zijn terugkeer naar de Schwerinfabriek gaf Fokker opdracht aan Reinhold Platz om een triplane te bouwen, zonder verdere informatie over het Sopwith-ontwerp.
